Our FREE Movie & Music night is coming up Friday, June 23. The fun starts at 7 p.m. with old time music on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin by Rachel Krause, Howard Rains, and Tricia Spencer. If you aren't dancing, you'll be tapping your feet to their upbeat tunes. And the kids will enjoy dancing with the giant, interactive puppets of the Flying Heart Theatre! 

 

After the concert, we'll show a short documentary on mid-Missouri fiddle music and the annual, immersive Bethel Youth Fiddle Camp that is carrying on this traditional form of music. Filmed and produced by Rachel Krause, "Dance to the Fiddle" is a glimpse into our past and future.

At 9:00 p.m. the movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? begins. The Coen brothers' amusing retelling of Homer's The Odyssey, this movie marries the ancient story with touchy subjects in America's history, as well as touching subjects like familial and brotherly love, and the music is a key element of the film.

So mark your calendars, grab a blanket or chairs and a picnic dinner, and meet us in the park!

Lawrence musicians Tricia Spencer & Howard Rains are both fiddlers, guitar-players, and singers who preserve and build upon the traditions of their home states of Texas and Kansas. Both multi-instrumentalists, they are steeped in family musical tradition and are dedicated to the preservation, performance, and sharing of old time music.

 

They will be joined by Rachel Krause, who most recently studied Missouri fiddling with John P. Williams as an apprentice in the Missouri Folk Arts Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. Rachel is the organizer of the Oddball Hoedown and recently completed the short documentary “Dance to the Fiddle”, which will be screened after their performance.
